Our children are our most priced possessions. If your child has suffered injuries from a fall, you want to provide the most immediate and best treatment for them.
Injuries from hard falls must be given immediate medical attention because of the possibility of broken or chipped bones. Many falls may include trauma to the spine which may impair normal body motion that can continue over years. Injuries of this type often result in chronic back pain and headaches.
In order to provide our patients with the best treatment possible, we also offer advice on how to avoid injuries in the first place. We list below ways to prevent the injuries and risks of falling where your child is involved. Please take a moment to read over these and protect your infant before the injuries happen.
Falls involving babies, infants and children
You can protect your child from accidental falling injuries by considering some everyday hazards and safeguarding against them. Inside the home, children can fall from stairs, windows or furniture. Outside the home are other sources or risk - shopping carts, playground equipment and more.
Follow these guidelines to protect your child from falls:
Look for playgrounds with soft surfaces to cushion your child if he or she falls, Examples of soft surfaces include wood chips, bark mulch, wood fibers, sand, pea gravel, shredded tires and rubber mats. Try to avoid concrete, asphalt and dirt surfaces. Under certain weather conditions, even sod may be too hard. Secure throw rugs to the floor with a piece of foam carpet backing, double-sided tape or a rubber pad. Keep your stairways clear of clutter to prevent your child from tripping. Use safety gates to keep toddlers away from stairs. Be sure to attach the gate to the wall if you're using one at the top of a staircase. Use safety belts to keep your child from falling from shopping carts. Stay close to the cart while you shop. Babies and infants can be wiggly and roll around easily; toddlers and small children can climb their way into trouble. Protect your children from falls by paying special attention to windows, cribs and beds, different areas of the house, and outdoor playgrounds.
